Initiatives and their impact

Initiatives such as the Indigenous Marathon Foundation and the John Moriarty Foundation play a large role in encouraging the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to participate in a sport. The Indigenous Marathon Project brings Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults into the sport world by bringing a selected squad with little experience to run a marathon, and has had an infectious impact on the wider Aboriginal community.

The John Moriarty Foundation and John Moriarty Football initiative has empowered Indigenous kids from a very young age to connect with sport and wellness, specifically through football and provides free pathways for kids at levels of experience, including travelling to remote schools where they provide ongoing clinics.

Government initiatives as well as funding are also extremely important in raising awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their culture in sport. Even though there is a lot more needed to be done to improve participation and understanding in sport, there are some government initiatives that have been created which have been very valuable for the First Nations community.

It is extremely important to have initiatives like these to get communities, especially regional and remote areas to have access to sport and physical activity and important to show public support towards these initiatives.
